Making Your Webpage Load Faster

A common mistake done by novice webmasters
is uploading image files that are very large, yet appear small on the webpage.

Keep in mind that there are several ways to control how an image is displayed on your screen or on your webpage, but the only way to change the actual size of the file is to resize or resample it in your graphics program.

1. Browser attributes of image:
Many software programs will give you an option to resize an image on a page. However, this only resizes how big the image will appear, not how big the image actually is. This results in the image appearing small and slightly distorted on the webpage, and it takes longer to download.

2. Improperly resizing in graphics program.
Graphics, scanner, and camera software programs usually have a zoom button, or automatically zoom out on the image so you can see all of it on the screen. This can be misleading and causes some users to think that the images are smaller than they actually are. Be sure the image you are working with is zoomed to 100%, and then use the 'resize' or 'resample' tools to make it the size you want.

3. Newer versions of Internet Explorer automatically 'zoom out' on the image so it fits on the screen, but the image is still a large filesize.
